Shirley A. Canada (nee: Henes), 90 years of age, and a resident of Oberlin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at UH Elyria Medical Center following a full and meaningful life.
She was born October 31, 1933 in South Amherst where she was raised. Shirley had made her home in Oberlin for over sixty years.
She was a member of Grace Old Fashion Baptist Church in South Amherst. Shirley loved her entire family, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She enjoyed spending extended periods of her time with her daughter Deborah in West Virginia. A special thanks to her granddaughter Susan and children for the care they gave her when living in their home, before moving into Welcome Nursing Home. Many family members enjoyed taking care of her and taking her to their homes for visits. She was affectionately known as “Ma” by family and friends. She left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Shirley enjoyed traveling, word puzzles and animals. She also enjoyed listening to bluegrass music and gospel music, and her family.
Survivors include her children, Douglas Canada (Cindy) of West Salem, Calvin Canada (companion Sandy) of Wellington; Wanda Horning of Amherst, Linda Canada of Lorain Yvonne “Sis” Canada of Elyria, and Deborah Sherepita (Jeff) of Genoa, West Virginia; numerous grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-eight years, James Luchen Canada on August 31, 2000; her children, James Canada, Joyce Sanders and her infant son and daughter; her grandchildren Rhonda and Joshua Canada; her siblings, Robert Henes, Howard Herbert, Marie Flynn, and Betty Smith; and her parents, Herbert and Elsie Henes (nee: Sagert).
Friends may call Monday, March 11, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral at 12:00 noon at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. The Rev. Farrell Keith, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in South Amherst, will officiate. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com . Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
